Who? What? Where?

When we got to Calle Larga, we found out that it was really a town of 3,000 people, 6 schools with no high school, but currently building one. Monica introduced us to Hugo and left us with him when we arrived. We had no idea who he was. We later learned that he worked for the “municipal” and had asked his father, also named Hugo, if we could stay with him. (We are still confused about who had requested our presence in Calle Larga, but we believe that it was not the English teachers nor the superintendent, but rather Hugo who is an assistant to the mayor. He provided the idea to the mayor to have volunteers in Calle Larga. He is also one of the few people that works in Calle Larga that speaks English.) We decided that the 3 of us girls would go live with Hugo, while Roman could have the honor of living with the mayor (alcalde), Nelson, of Calle Larga. We thought the situation was hilarious. During that same day, we were told that we would know what our permanent housing would be by the end of the week and then it was changed to us knowing 2 days from our arrival date and then it now seems that we won’t know until after a week.

We went to a delicious restaurant, La Ruca, in San Felipe. We ate parillada (tender meats with potatoes, vegetables) with Hugo and tried to converse in broken Spanish with Maria Theresa, who was the school district’s superintendent. (See Above)
